This year, 2004-05, it has rained as if El Nino is visiting. The rains started in October. They are still coming as of February 20 and they are warm storms from the south. This warm and ample moisture is irrigating the once dormant desert of Anza Borrego State Park and driving the most spectacular flower bloom in recent memory. Anza Borrego State Park is a gem for those of us who live in Southern California. The park is close, it is huge and camping is allowed anywhere in the park your heart and soul suggest you pitch your tent and lay your bag.
The normally brown desert landscape has been transformed into a tropical green landscape with flowers blooming wherever one gazes. This diversity of colors and the ability of the desert to wait for years to display her palette, the art which unfolds at every glimpse in every direction, gives one moments to pause and reflect on the wonder of nature and God's hand in our lives.
I am speechless, which is good as I am alone. I stand amidst such simple wonders reflecting on the beauty. I enjoy the desert blooms of a wet season, perhaps as a symbol of hope eternal! I will return many times this year and discover more of this unique landscape and perhaps of myself also. It is a discovery and appreciation I crave. Adios!
